For Momma and Bill’s last day in Argentina, we decided to head to the track and engage in one of Bill and my favorite activities…betting on the ponies.
I first came to enjoy the track during the glory days of Hollywood Park’s Friday Night Racing with $1 beer and hotdogs. I’ll admit, initially I was more keen on the $1 beer and hotdogs, but I quickly learned that betting on the horses can be extremely fun, especially if you win! My love for the track was cemented when I was working on the Breeders’ Cup account and Peter Rotondo Jr (& Sr) taught me how to read a race sheet and other fun ways to wager on the races. Danielle and Marc were both new to the track and I made them watch Peter Rotondo Sr in action at the Belmont in 2011 to really get them pumped up about their first time.
We headed over to the Hipodromo Argentino de Palermo for the afternoon to enjoy the races. Betting on horses isn’t always the easiest thing to figure out, so to complicate matters more, try betting on horses in another language. Placing my first exacta was interesting to say the least! Despite a hot tip from Peter to always bet on the outside post positions in Buenos Aires, I didn’t win any bets that day. Bill, however broke even. All and all, a fantastic day at the track!
