My dear, very good friend Jeremie Skype’d me with the AWESOME news that he was coming to meet me in South America. He decided to cash in on some miles and make a last minute jaunt to Peru to join me for a week of trekking and relaxation in the Andes. The week was spent at the idyllic Way Inn, a beautiful lodge surrounded by the mountains, just outside of Huaraz.
During the week, we were offered the opportunity to partake in a shamanic cleanse if we wanted; basically a cleansing diet with no salt, seasoning, sugar, oil, processed food, etc. Post-cleanse, you’re supposed to gradually come back into your traditional diet, except ideally a bit more healthy! And no drinking for 30 days…a tough one for me while traveling!
On of the mornings, we decided to set off and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site Huascarán National Park (Parque Nacional Huascarán) which was located close to the lodge. If hiking, it’s about a nine hour journey with an overnight camping stay, but we had limited time (and lacking in the camping supplies) so we drove there; me with Gume on his motorcycle and Jamael drove Jeremie, Ty and Jakob on the moto-tractor. Huascarán National Park is located in the Cordillera Blanca Range in the Peruvian Andes and at its highest reaches 6,768m. In Huascarán National Park, we trekked around Laguna Llaca which is at 4,474m. It’s a really beautiful glacial lake at the bottom of El Huascarán.
Not only is Jeremie one of my good friends, but he’s an even more amazing photographer (and the man behind the best 4th of July video…ever. ‘Merica!). Here are a few of Jeremie’s photos from our mission to Laguna Llaca in Huascarán National Park.
The week was fabulous! I had such an amazing time catching up with Jeremie and just chilling; enjoying the mountain scenery, exploring, yoga, playing many (many) games of chess with the sometimes-resident (he’s from the Amazon) Shaman, Gume (we played between 30-40 games; I won 5…he’s quite good), meeting some great new friends and some reading, coloring and general recharging of the batteries.
