When I decided that the theme of August would be all about peach, I asked my friend Spencer if he would create the perfect peach cocktail. He not only created a delicious Peach Whiskey Smash, but he also included my favorite jelly in the whole world as an ingredient.
Mayhaws are a fruit that are only grown in a small part of the Southern US and my family has always gotten mayhaws from our cousins in Southwest Georgia. Since they are quite rare, they aren’t all that easy to obtain so in this particular cocktail, it will usually have to be substituted, but if you can get your hands on some, buy lots! To me, mayhaw jelly tastes like the perfect blend of apples and honey. Goes great on toast, with peanut butter, baked in cookies and now, in cocktails!
Run out, get some whiskey and peaches and make this tasty beverage!
Southern Peach Smash (created by Spencer Spellman)
1/2 peach, cut into thick slices
3-4 fresh mint leaves
1 lemon wedge
1 ounce water
1/2 ounce Mayhaw jelly (or a type of flavored simple syrup)
2 ounces whiskey (Spencer uses Clyde May’s Alabama Whiskey)
1 sprig mint
1 thin peach slice for garnish
Muddle 1/2 peach, mint leaves, lemon wedge, water and jelly in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and whiskey. Shake and strain into an ice filled glass. Garnish with mint and peach slice. Serve and enjoy. 🙂
